Bat Houses

 BAT HOUSES

Attracting bats to your yard is becoming a new alternative to insect control. Bats are the major predators of night-flying insects. These nocturnal flying mammals can eat 3000-7000 insects each night and can be an important weapon in a chemical-free arsenal for bug control.

Odds of attracting bats are good for well-designed, well-built bat houses mounted according to recommendations. Bats have to find new roosts on their own. There are no proven lures or attractants that can be inserted in or applied to a bat house. Bats will investigate new roosting opportunities while foraging at night. They are quite good at detecting crevices, cracks, nooks, and crannies that offer shelter against the elements and predators. Bat houses installed on buildings or poles are easier for bats to locate, have greater occupancy rates, and are occupied 2.5 times faster than those mounted on trees. Bat houses located near a permanent source of water, especially a marsh, lake or river, are more likely to attract bats. Pick installation sites with great care to avoid having to move a bat house once it becomes occupied.

Old Crow Woodcrafts builds well designed and well built bat houses, optimized to attract bats to your property. A small bat house which will house about 100 bats sells for $25.00, while a 200 bat capacity house sells for $45.00
